Fewer Avian Influenza cases is Good News for Poultry Keepers

Click on the map below which shows the current outbreaks of H5N1 in poultry (Protection and Surveillance zones). This is a different strain (H5N8) to last year  and the beginning of this year. The clinical disease in poultry is the same.

I have attempted to list all relevant outbreaks. You cannot assume that I have found them all or that this includes the most recent cases.

The number of positive isolations from wild birds is increasing and they are being detected further south.

Avian Influenza Protection Zones

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) came into force across Great Britain on 3 November 2021, and in Northern Ireland on 17 November 2021.

03/11/21 – “Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been declared across Great Britain effective from 5pm on 3 November 2021″

21/11/21 – From 8.30pm on 21 November 2021, a new avian influenza prevention zone (AIPZ) has been declared in parts of North Yorkshire in England, namely the districts of Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire. This means that it is a legal requirement for all bird keepers in that area to keep their birds indoors and to follow strict biosecurity measures in order to limit the spread of and eradicate the disease.

On 21 November 2021, an additional AIPZ came into force in parts of North Yorkshire in England, affecting the districts of Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire.

From 00:01 on 29 November 2021 housing measures will come into force across the UK, these will be in addition to the current mandatory enhanced biosecurity measures introduced in GB on 3 November 2021 and in NI on the 17 November 2021.
